In a tragic incident which took place on Mahanadi bridge here, a girl was killed in a two- wheeler accident following which her lover, who was unable to bear the loss, jumped into the swollen river and is feared drowned.
Cuttack Deputy Commissioner of Police Sanjiv Arora said the tragedy took place on Sunday evening when the couple, who hail from Bihar, were returning on a two-wheeler from nearby Jagatpur to their rented lodgings at Mahanadi Vihar. The duo were employed with a private company in Jagatpur.
The vehicle was hit on the rear by a speeding vehicle and the girl, who was riding pillion, died on the spot. The youth, who was injured in the accident and bleeding profusely, was unable to bear the loss and jumped into the swollen river before the bystanders could react, Arora said yesterday.
Odisha Disaster Rapid Action Force and fire brigade personnel scoured the river on Sunday and yesterday but are yet to trace the 24-year-old youth, he said.
The girl's body has been handed over to her parents, he added.
