A 17-year-old girl

was found dead in her house at Baliasara village in Kabisurya Nagara area of Ganjam district, police said today.

The body of the deceased, a Class X student in the local high school, was recovered from her room yesterday. Her father and mother had died some years ago and she was living with her grand-father and grand-mother in the house, sources said, they said.

Police suspected that she might have been stoned to death by some unidentified miscreants on Friday night as injury marks were seen near her eye-brow.

"Some miscreants might have stoned her to death during night while she was asleep in the room," said sub divisional police officer (SDPO), Chhatrapur, A.Ch Pahi.

The old grand-father and grand-mother of the deceased were asleep in another room of the house while her brother had gone to Berhampur, police said.

At this stage it is difficult to say whether the girl had been raped before being killed, police said. "We have initiated investigation from all angles and wait for the report of the post-mortem," said SDPO.

He said the police scientific team and dog squad were pressed for the investigation.
