A police outpost in- charge has been removed from post for alleged negligence after an 18-year-old girl was hacked to death by a jilted lover in Uttar Pradesh's Shamli district, police said today.

The Class 12 girl was killed with a sickle at Ghar Shayam village in Kandhla police station area of Shamli on Wednesday when she was returning home from college.

Police outpost in-charge Kailash Chand was removed last evening for negligence of duty, Kandhla police station SHO O P Choudhary said.

Yesterday, family members of the girl staged a protest.

The main accused, Amarpal (26), has been arrested and the weapon used in the crime seized. Three other people were with Amarpal when he attacked the girl.

Tension prevailed in the village as the girl and the accused belonged to different communities, police said.
