The 20-year-old girl student, who suffered serious injuries after she was allegedly mowed down by a jeep inside her college campus, succumbed to her injuries here, police said today.

Tasni Basheer, a third year civil engineering student of the prestigious College of Engineering Trivandrum (CET), was walking to the hostel when a jeep carrying at least 15 student revelers went out of control and hit her. The vehicle was driven by a fourth-year-student Baiju from Kannur.

Though she underwent at least three surgeries and was on ventilator support, her life could not be saved and she passed away at around midnight yesterday, police said.

City Police Commissioner H Venkatesh said they were expecting to arrest the culprits in a day or two. The accused are also likely to be charged under sect 304 of IPC (culpable homicide not amounting to murder).

The relatives of the girl, hailing from Malappuram district, said they were informed about the incident only very late. Though the incident occurred at around 4.30 pm on August 19, police was informed by only 8 pm. They also alleged that the boy students were in an inebriated state.

The student revellers had come to the campus in two jeeps and a mini lorry flouting CET norms.

In a similar incident in 2002, a girl student had been killed after being hit by a two wheeler inside the campus.

Meanwhile, the college management has suspended 12 students.
