Girl suffers bullet injuries in celebratory firing, dies

In a tragic incident, a 12-year-old girl was killed when she was accidentally shot at during celebratory firing at a relative's wedding that she was attending in west Delhi's Ranhola area here last night.

The victim, identified as Divya had sustained bullet injury to her thigh, but doctors said she died due to excessive bleeding.

The groom's father, identified as Sushil Vats, has been arrested by the police in this connection and his licenced gun which was used in the firing, seized.

"The incident took place around 8:30 pm where one Aman was getting married at Baprola village in Ranhola. Divya was attending the wedding as Aman is her distant relative. She was dancing close to groom's horse when suddenly a gunshot was heard and Divya was seen collapsing on the ground. She was hit by the bullet in her thigh and was bleeding profusely," said a senior police official.
 

Immediately, the wedding procession was stopped and the girl rushed to Ayushman Hospital in Dwarka. Meanwhile, someone made a PCR call and a police team too reached the spot.

An operation was conducted on her and the bullet was removed but the girl had already lost a lot of blood. Desperate efforts by doctors to revive her could not succeed. She was referred to Mata Chanan Devi Hospital in Janakpuri but all efforts failed and she breathed her last around 4:30 am today.

Initially, it was not clear so as to who fired the shot as even the victim's parents claimed that they were away from their daughter at the time of the incident.

"We then questioned almost everybody at the function to determine so as to who had fired the gun and it was revealed that it was the groom's father Sushil Vats. He has been arrested. We are investigating whether the family delayed taking the girl to the hospital while trying to hush up the matter," he added.

A case of murder has been registered at Ranhola Police Station.
