A girl tried to immolate herself outside the SSP's office of a police station in Uttar Pradesh's Bulandshahr district today afternoon, the police said.

The girl, who started sprinkling kerosene at her in the waiting room of the senior superintendent of police's office, was rescued by a police constable, an officer said.

The girl alleged that her step-father, who married her mother in 2013, has been harassing her. She accused the police of not registering the complaint, and thus, decided to commit suicide, the officer said, adding that the SSP was not present in the office at the time of the incident.

However, SP (City) Pravin Ranjan denied the girl's allegations.

"The whole matter relates to a dispute over the ownership of a house, in which they lived," Ranjan said.
