The body of a six-year-old girl, who was washed away in flash floods, following heavy rains near Mettupalayam last night, was recovered today.

Mettupalayam experienced heavy rains, accompanied by thunder and lightning, from last night and the rain waters gushed into some 10 houses located either sides of a bridge, police said today.

As the four members of a family-- parents, a son and a daughter, in one of the houses were attempting to come out and move to safer place, the girl slipped and washed away in the waters, they said.

Hearing about the flash floods, police and fire service and rescue personnel rushed to the spot, but could not make any headway against the heavy gushing of water.

The fire and rescue personnel, who resumed their rescue operations this morning, recovered the body of the girl, near a power station, some eight kms from the place of occurance, they said.
