A global research organisation will recognise Prafulla Samantra, a leader of social justice movements, in Washington DC in the US.

Samantra was one of the key leaders responsible for rallying tribes, indigenous to Odisha's Niyamgiri region to stop Vedanta.

Samantra, who is the winner of Goldman Environmental Prize, will share his story and then join a conversation with experts on access to justice, indigenous land rights and sustainable development.

"WRI will recognise one of this year's incredible Goldman Environmental Prize winners, Prafulla Samantara in Washington DC," a WRI statement said.

Samantra is a leader of social justice movements in India who led a historic 12-year legal battle that affirmed the indigenous Dongria Kondh's land rights and protected the Niyamgiri Hills from a massive, open-pit aluminium ore mine.

Samantara is among the six winners of the Goldman Environmental Prize 2017.

The Goldman Environmental Prize is one of the most prestigious environmental awards, which recognises champions from six continents.
