Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC) officials said that its squads were conducting inspections at streets and many shopkeepers and public smokers had been fined during recent days for flouting norms regarding use and sale of tobacco products.

The action comes following reports of huge number of shops and commercial establishments openly selling tobacco products near schools and colleges and also to minors.

As per government rules, sale of tobacco products is banned within 100 metre radius of educational institutions.
