GNLA operative shot dead

A wanted cadre of the outlawed

Garo National Liberation Army (GNLA) was shot dead in an encounter with the police in Meghalaya's South Garo Hills district, the police said today.

Acting on a tip off, a suspected operative of the outfit was picked up from a Mitapgre-bound bus last evening during a raid at Dajiteksagre village, the police said.

Following on a lead given by the operative during interrogation, a counter insurgency operation was conducted at Sawekolgre village under Chokpot PS in which a brief encounter took place at around 7:30 PM yesterday with armed militants, district SP Lakador Syiem said.
 

He said the body of a militant was recovered along with a Chinese-made pistol from the area and was later identified as Pekdok, who was holding the rank of a deputy area commander in Chokpot area.

The alleged operative of the outfit, who was picked up from the bus, was identified as Tenobirth N Marak and was arrested, the SP said.

Formed in late 2010, the GNLA was considered a terror outfit active in the Garo Hills region in the state.

The outfit was known for kidnapping, abduction and killing of civilians and security forces.
