The beaches in Goa turned into party zones last night as lakhs of tourists gathered here to welcome the New Year.

The beaches of Candolim, Calangute, Baga up to Morjim and Ashwem in north Goa and Colva to Palolem in south Goa witnessed a sea of people arriving to usher in the New Year.

The parties which began since the morning of December 31 continued till the early hours of January 1 with revellers making the most out of their visit to the coastal state.

The Churches across the state held midnight masses to bid farewell to 2016 and welcome 2017.

Meanwhile, the roads leading to the beach villages were choked as revellers from the neighbouring states of Maharashtra and Karnataka thronged the seaside party venues. Zuari and Mandovi bridges, too, witnessed a heavy flow of traffic in the evening.

On the beach front the skyline was filled with fancy fire-crackers as huge crowd began the countdown to usher in the New Year.

Police kept a close watch since the last two days to avoid any untoward incident.
