Opposition Congress today said it will move a resolution during the Budget session demanding installation of a statue of Dr Jack Sequeira in the Assembly complex.

The Congress Legislative Party met here today.

It was decided at the meeting, chaired by Leader of Opposition Chandrakant Kavlekar, that the resolution should be moved in the coming session which will start in mid-February.

The late Sequeira was one of the leaders who campaigned, during a 1967 referendum, against proposed merger of Goa with Maharashtra.

Majority of the people of the then Union Territory voted to stay out of Maharashtra.

Kavlekar told reporters that a private member's resolution will be signed by all sixteen Congress legislators and moved on the first day of the Budget session.

"Those in favour of our demand should support our resolution on the floor of the House," he said.

While the ruling BJP has opposed the demand to install Sequeira's statue, its ally Goa Forward Party is in favour of the proposal.

The state Congress today also decided to write to the Union Ministry of Surface Transport demanding that section 112 of the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988 be amended to exempt tourist taxis from mandatory installation of speed governors.

Taxi operators in Goa had recently gone on a strike against the mandatory installation of speed governors.
