"The file is with the Chief Minister. The decision will be taken in another two days," state transport minister Ramakrishna Dhavalikar said last night after a meeting with Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar.

The transport department had last week announced that wearing helmets would be compulsory for riders on all roads of the state.

The rule is currently implemented on all the highways.

The government had decided to make helmets compulsory after it was noticed that on an average 300 lives were lost annually on the roads in various accidents, where majority of the deaths were caused by head injuries.

The department had announced to make helmet compulsory for pillion riders too, but its implementation has also been deferred following objections by the public.
