Following strident protests by activists demanding that mother tongue be made the sole medium of instruction (MOI) in schools, the Goa government today announced setting up a committee to find a solution to the contentious issue.

"A committee has been formed under chairmanship of educationist Bhaskar Nayak which will provide a solution to the state government on MOI issue," Chief Minister Laxmikant Parsekar told reporters.

He said the panel will study models of MOI adopted by neighbouring states and in vogue in Konkan belt (which is Konkani speaking) for the wider socio-economic aspect.

"The committee will have to submit its report within 120 days," the CM added.

Bharatiya Bhasha Suraksha Manch (BBSM) has been holding protests demanding that mother tongue should made the sole medium of instruction in Goan schools.

The organisation is also against government's stand to continue grants to some English medium schools.
