Goa government today announced that it would do away with outsourcing of distribution of electricity bills, as there were many complaints of delay.
State power minister Milind Naik stated in the legislative assembly that the state-run Goa Electronics Limited (GEL) will be assigned the job of printing computerised bills.
"For a customer base of six lakh in the state, we require 600 meter readers. We want to do away with the current privatisation of the bill and do it in-house," Naik said, responding to the cut motion moved by opposition benches on demand for grants for the electricity department.
He said the department already had 550 meter readers, while remaining posts would be filled.
The government, Naik said, was also in talks with the State Bank of India for online payment facility.
"I agree that performance of the department is not up to the expectation. This is because there was no planning in the department for last seven-and-half years," Naik said.
