Goa Health Minister Vishwajit Rane during his visit to the state-run Goa Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) here today was shocked to see stray dogs moving freely in the emergency and neo-natal wards.

Rane visited GMCH for the first time after becoming the minister. He was the first Health Minister to visit GMCH in the last five years, said a senior official from the Directorate of Health Services who accompanied him.

The minister was shocked to see the "mess" the hospital was in, he said.

"Six dogs were having a field day in casualty (emergency) ward.... Security personnels on duty were found to be lethargic," said the official.

The minister was also stunned to see dogs in the neo-natal ward.

Further, bedsheets were found to be stained and dirty. "The minister immediately asked the nurses to change the bedsheets," said the official.

The bathrooms were found to be "stinking", he added.

When contacted, Rane however only said he interacted with the doctors, staff, patients and interns, and refused to divulge more about his visit.
