A woman, whose minor daughter was allegedly molested by a cleric in Vasco town, today sought police protection fearing attack on her family.

"I have been facing abuse from a few people for filing complaint against the cleric who molested my 13-year-old girl. Since I filed the police complaint, we are living in fear," the 43-year-old woman said.

Her face hidden under a veil, the woman held a press conference.

The police arrested the 32-year-old cleric Sarfraj Ahmad in Vasco two days ago after the complaint was filed. He allegedly molested the girl when she had gone to his house to fetch some utensils.

"I should not be troubled for seeking justice for my daughter. It has become difficult for me to go out among the people," the woman said.

Tension prevailed in Vasco town last night when a group of locals stopped police from conducting panchanama (crime spot inspection). The police were accompanied by the victim and workers of local NGO Savera, led by Tara Kerkar.

Ahmad's wife filed a complaint against Kerkar alleging that she assaulted him. Vasco police today arrested Kerkar and released her later.

Kerkar said the allegation was baseless and she was being targeted because she was helping the victim.

A senior police officer said if the victim's family wanted protection, it would be provided.
