The bypoll for the Panaji Assembly seat, necessitated by the death of former chief minister Manohar Parrikar, will take place on May 19, a senior poll official said Tuesday.

The bypoll would be held along with that of five other Assembly seats in Tamil Nadu and Karnataka.

Parrikar died on March 17 after a long battle with pancreatic cancer.

"Polling for Panaji Assembly seat would be held on May 19, while votes would be counted on May 23," the official said Tuesday.

The poll notification for Panaji Assembly constituency would be issued on April 22 while the last date for filing nominations will be April 29.

The nominations would be scrutinised on April 30 and the last date for withdrawing them would be May 2, he said.

Incidentally, It will be the second bypoll for Panaji Assembly seat since state polls in 2017.

The first one was in August that year after BJP MLA Siddharth Kunkolienkar resigned from the House to allow Parrikar, then Defence Minister, to become an MLA.
