The Goa government today assured the state Legislative Assembly that the new Police Bill, amending certain irrelevant sections, would be tabled during the next session.
The new Police Bill will be tabled during the next Assembly session. Various sections which are currently embedded in it irrelevantly would be corrected, Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar told the House.
"For example, police uses section 144 for offences like begging, loitering in the night or stray cattle. The section is actually not meant for these offences. It is like you are conducting an operation for a disease when it can be cured with a minor injection," Parrikar said.
Some people might find the Bill "authoritative" and some may feel it is "too mild," he said.
The state government will put up the draft of the Bill for public suggestions before it is given a final shape.
Parrikar said this while responding to a question raised by Congress legislator Atanasio Monserratte on the floor of the House.
"The draft does not indicate total mind of the government. After receiving suggestions, we will include whichever are acceptable," the Chief Minister said.
He told the House that the draft of Police Bill, 2008, which has been referred to the select committee of the Assembly, stands scrapped and the government will work on a separate draft.
