Director of Women and Child Welfare Department, Sanjiv Gadkar, said that the Crime Branch would be probing the alleged nexus between gangsters and the staff of Apna Ghar, a government-run shelter home.

Four children, a gangster and a caretaker of Apna Ghar were detained last month by Porvorim police. It was found that the gangster was using the children for crimes such as thefts or robberies.

"Everyone will be probed. If the Director (himself) is involved, even he will not be spared," Gadkar said.

According to the police, the caretakers were helping the children to escape from the facility, while the caretakers alleged that the NGO 'Stop Child Abuse Now' was responsible for the same.

A report prepared by senior government officer Lavinson Martins had pointed out several loopholes in the functioning of Apna Ghar. Gadkar said the department had not referred Martins report to the Crime Branch. It was proceeding on the FIR filed by Porvorim police.
