Goa will soon have a mangroves park, to be set up jointly by the state government and the National Institute of Oceanography (NIO).

"The park will provide educational and recreational experience to the tourists as well as the locals. It will be located along the National Highway," Dr Sayeeda Wafar, NIO scientist and executive member of Mangroves Society of India, said here today.

Dr Wafar was addressing a seminar on "Working with Ecology for Successful Economy - Planning for Goa", organised by the NGO Goa Bachao Abhiyan.

The park will be spread over 56.6 hectares of land.

"The park will give impetus to eco-tourism and will also be an educational experience as it will provide information on various species of mangrove plants," she said.

"The mangroves in Goa are under threat due to pollution, reclamation and development," Dr Wafar added.
