Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi today asked the Government Ayurvedic College here to take the lead in research and development activities of traditional system of medicine encompassing Assam, the North East region and South East Asian countries.

Addressing the 67th Foundation Day and Annual Function of the College, Gogoi underscored the need to focus on research and development to modernise the traditional system of medicine and exhorted upon its management to take the lead in this regard.

He said the government has accorded priority to Ayurvedic and other traditional systems of treatment as they are affordable, effective sans any side-effects.

"Unlike Allopathy, which is costly, Ayurvedic and other traditional means of treatment are within the reach of the common man," he said.

Assuring the College management of funds for setting up of a research and development centre for Ayurveda and herbal medicine, Gogoi asked the Vice Chancellor of Srimanta Sankaradeva University of Health Sciences to submit a proposal to the Government in this regard.

Gogoi also assured the college of Government support in filling up the posts of teachers, allocation of more funds for medicine and a girls' hostel.
