Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi today hailed the UPA government's decision to revoke the ordinance on convicted lawmakers and described it as 'a bold step'.

"The ordinance would go a long way in cleansing the political system by preventing unholy nexus with criminals," Gogoi said in a statement here.

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh deserves all praise for his 'sagacity and graciousness' on the issue, thus reflecting the mood of the people, particularly the young generation, in a true democratic spirit, he said.

"The revoking of the ordinance has enhanced the image of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi and Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi reflecting the mood of the party as well as people of the country," Gogoi added.

The union cabinet last night decided to withdraw the controversial ordinance on convicted lawmakers as well as a related Bill in the face of mounting public opinion against the measure.

In a 20-minute meeting, presided over by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, the cabinet overturned its earlier decision of September 24 to provide immunity to convicted lawmakers from immediate disqualification.
