Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi today handed over National Tri-Colour and Organisation Flag to set off the first-ever expedition to the Mt Everest from Assam at a function held here.
The 11-member team led by Manash Barooah would leave Guwahati on April 3 to begin the expedition organised by Asom Everest Expedition Organising Committee of Assam Mountaineering Association.
Speaking on the occasion Chief Minister Gogoi said, "The stupendous efforts of the expedition members to scale Mount Everest signifies the courage and determination of the youths of Assam which the state government also accords due importance."

Stating the government would do everything possible to encourage such expeditions, he also announced that the government would give land to set up an institute of mountaineering and trekking in the state.
Assam government released Rs two crore for the expedition and chief minister assured more financial assistance to the Mountaineering Association in all its future endeavours.
Gogoi also distributed certificates and badges to 200 trainee mountaineers at the function.
Assam Mountaineering Association for the promotion and growth of mountaineering organises training and trekking programme for children and youths.
