Gogoi mourns death of Bhupen Hazarika's wife

Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi today mourned the death of Dada Saheb Phalke award winner late Bhupen Hazarika's estranged wife Priyamvada Patel Hazarika.

Gogoi, in his message, recalled her contribution in the field of culture and prayed for eternal peace of the departed soul, an official release said here.

Gogoi also expressed his heartfelt condolences to the members of the bereaved family.

88-year-old Priyamvada, passed away at a hospital in Canada yesterday where she was admitted last week following a stroke, family sources said here.

Kenyan-born Priyamvada, a noted yester-year danseuse, had met Hazarika at Columbia University where they were studying and got married in 1950.
 

The couple, who later separated but did not divorce is survived by their only son Tez Bhupen Hazarika who lives in the United States.
