Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi today said the state government was in favour of yoga, but not for making it compulsory in government schools and other educational institutions across the state.

"The state government is in favour of yoga or any other forms of physical education, but not making them mandatory in schools and other educational institutions," the Chief Minister said in a statement here.

He pointed out that Union HRD minister Smriti Irani should accord equal priority to yoga as well as extending financial assistance to model schools.

"More and more model schools are needed, especially in tea and tribal belts, minorities and other backward parts of the state," he added.
