Haryana Police today said it has so far recovered nearly 43 kg jewellery and over Rs 2 lakh in cash from the accused of the sensational bank robbery case at Gohana in Sonipat district.

A total of 43 kg and 910 gm of jewellery and Rs 2.65 lakh in cash have been recovered so far, Sonipat SP Arun Singh said in a release here.

Cash and jewellery, believed to be worth crores of rupees, were stolen from Gohana branch of Punjab National Bank, 200 kms from here, on the intervening night of October 25 and 26. The incident came to light on October 27.

The robbers had dug a 125-foot-long and 2.5-foot-wide tunnel to the bank from a nearby house lying unoccupied for the past 4-5 years to carry out the Bollywood-style heist.

They had randomly targeted bank lockers, breaking 86 of them. The bank, located in a residential-cum-commercial area of the town, had 350 lockers, the SP said.

Three days after the heist, the police had claimed to have cracked the case with the arrest of three persons and recovery of jewellery weighing over 24 kg from them.

The accused were Surender, Balraj and Satish, all residents of Katwal village, Sonepat.

Apart from cash and jewellery, the police had also recovered a country-made pistol with two cartridges.

The other accused of the case are Rajesh, a resident of Katwal village, and Mahipal, the owner of the abandoned house, through which the tunnel was dug, police had said.

Mahipal allegedly committed suicide after consuming some poisonous substance soon after he was booked, they had said.
