Gold jewellery worth around Rs 1.5 lakh, besides silver valuables, mementos and cash, was stolen from eminent sitar player Manilal Nag's Cossipore residence in the northern part of the city this afternoon.

The incident occurred at around 2 P.M. When unknown miscreants broke into Nag's residence on Govinda Mondal Road in the Cossipore police station area, police said.

"The residents were taking an afternoon nap when the burglars broke into the first floor of Nag's house and stole gold ornaments worth Rs 1.5 lakh, several silver mementos, silver utensils and cash amounting to Rs 35,000," a senior Kolkata Police officer said.

As the residents were sleeping on the second floor, it became quite easy for the burglars to execute the theft uninterrupted, he said adding that "instead of breaking the locks of the almirahs, they opened the same using the keys".

Kolkata Police's anti-burglary section along with Cossipore police station have started a probe into the burglary, the officer added.
