Three thieves, one of them posing as a policeman, allegedly stole gold ornaments worth about Rs 3 lakh belonging to a senior citizen today after tricking her in suburban Versova, the police said.
According to the police, Suman Mastud, a resident of Gharkul Housing Society on New Juhu-Versova Link Road, was on her way to buy milk packets at about 9 am when an unidentified person tapped her from behind, claiming a person waiting near her building gate is calling her.
The unsuspecting 63-year-old widow walked towards the unidentified man standing near the gate where the latter introduced himself as a policeman and warned her that wearing gold ornaments in the area is not safe.

"The fake cop told her that the area is not safe and so she should not walk wearing so much gold ornaments but she ignored him. At the same time, the fake cop intercepted a pedestrian, who appeared to be his accomplice, and warned him not to wear gold, since the area is prone to robberies. The pedestrian removed his gold chain and kept it inside his bag before walking away," the victim's son-in-law Shreekrishna Gavhane, who works with a private firm, said.
This way, the accused gained Suman's confidence after which she took off her gold necklace, three bangles and a chain weighing 85 grams which is valued at about Rs 3 lakh and kept them in a bag offered by the accused, the police said.
However, when she returned home and checked the bag in which her valuables were kept, she was shocked to see nothing in it.
