Gold seized, one arrested for smuggling

A 32-year old man from Kerala was today arrested at the airport here for allegedly attempting to smuggle 2.5 kg of gold from Sharjah.

Customs officials found Sujith Kumar of Kozhikode carrying the gold biscuits hidden in an iron box when they searched his baggage on his arrival from Sharjah by an Air Arabia flight, police said.

The iron box weighed around 3.5 kgs and on opening the officials found 2.5 kg of gold biscuits packed inside. The officials handed over the 32-year-old to the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence.

The value of the seizure was stated to be around Rs 50 lakh.
 

The officials at the airport had recently seized a total of 2.5 kgs of gold from two persons, also hailing from Kerala, on two separate days.
