A CISF jawan, posted at the Chennai airport, has been suspended for allegedly being involved in a gold smuggling racket, officials said today.

Constable H Rao (45) has been suspended after his activities in the terminal area were found to be suspicious, they said, adding that the intelligence and vigilance unit of the force detected that he was allegedly acting as a courier for some of those allegedly involved in the smuggling of gold to and from the Chennai airport.

No recoveries (of cash or kind) have been made from the jawan after his alleged dubious activities were recently detected, but it was found that certain cash deposits have been made in his bank accounts, probably in lieu of offering his services, they said.

The case, the officials said, will soon be referred to probe agencies for further investigation into his role and those associated with him in the alleged smuggling racket.

The Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) is deployed to guard the Chennai airport.
