Riding high on firm global trends and increased buying by local jewellers, gold rose for the second day as prices climbed by another Rs 170 per 10 grams at the bullion market here today.

Silver also surged to close above the key Rs 39,000 mark per kg on the back of heavy industrial demand.

Standard gold (99.5 purity) rose by Rs 170 to finish at Rs 30,000 per 10 grams from Friday's closing level of Rs 29,830.

Pure gold (99.9 purity) also surged by a similar margin to end at Rs 30,150 per 10 grams as against Rs 29,980 earlier.

Silver (.999 fineness) moved up by Rs 360 per kg to conclude at Rs 39,210 from Rs 38,850, previously.

Globally, gold prices hit a four-month peak as the US dollar index slumped to its lowest in three years but analysts warned the greenbacks decline could be short-lived as it was not driven by fundamentals.

Spot gold was up 0.3 per cent at USD 1,342.11 an ounce at early trade.

Spot silver rose 0.6 per cent to USD 17.35 an ounce.
