Gold worth Rs 7.22 crore seized,four train passengers arrested

The DRI officials today seized 23.1 kg of gold worth about Rs 7.22 crore from four train passengers arrived here from Ramanathapuram and arrested them.

Acting on a tip off that gold bars was being brought to Chennai by train from Ramanathapuram, the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence officials intercepted the passengers at the Egmore railway station, a DRI release said.

The four admitted to the officials that the gold was concealed in specially designed pouches worn around their waist.

"The passengers admitted that the gold bars were smuggled to India from Sri Lanka via Ramanathapuram", the release said.

All the four persons have been arrested, it said.
