The Nationalist Congress Party today asked the Election Commission to take action against Gondia Collector Abhimanyu Kale for allegedly violating the election code of conduct in order to help the ruling BJP.
NCP spokesperson Nawab Malik today said that Kale, in written orders, had instructed all banks in the area to remain open during public holidays in order to disburse compensation to farmers who had lost their crops to pest attacks.
Malik alleged that the pest attacks happened six months ago but the compensation money was transferred to the state Treasury now while the election code was in place.
He said that money would now be distributed among the affected farmers and this would influence voting.
The election code of conduct is in place in Bhandara-Gondia due to the Lok Sabha bypoll there on May 28.
The bypoll was necessitated after sitting BJP MP Nana Patole resigned from the seat.
