Good Friday observed peacefully in Odisha

People across Odisha, including communally sensitive Kandhamal district which had witnessed largescale riots in 2008, today mourned crucification of Jesus Christ by observing Good Friday.

Prayer meetings, Carol Community songs, Fasting prayers were held and 7th Statements of dying Christ read as part of the Good Friday. Some churches have held the mid night prayer last night.

Elaborate security arrangement were made at different places keeping in view of the sensitivity of the area in Kandhamal and other parts of the state, a home department official said.

Reports of peaceful Good Friday came from Phulbani, Daringbadi, Raikia, Nuagam, Balliguda, Kotagarh and Tumudibandh areas of Kandhamal district which had witnessed largescale riots in the aftermath of the killing of VHP leader Laxmanananda Saraswati in August 2008.
 

In view of the Good Friday and Easter Sunday on coming Sunday, churches have been decorated and week long programs chalked out to mark the occasion.
