Goods train runs into big tyres on track

A possible mishap involving a goods train was averted when the driver stopped it after two big tyres left on the track got trapped in the wheels of the engine near here early today, police said.

Driver Panavaraj stopped the train after hearing a loud noise and found two tyres of a four-wheeler trapped in the wheel of the engine at Ilavamarathur in Salem Division of Southern Railway around 1 am, they said.

One more tyre was found on the sides of the track.

The driver immediately informed the railway officials who visited the spot and arranged to remove the tyres.
 

Police said it took about two hours to remove the pieces of the tyres and the train left after around three-hour delay.

It was not known whether it was an act of sabotage or not and investigations were on, Police said.

A local railway gate keeper, who was questioned by police, indicated possible role of a local mentally challenged person who used to place small stones on the track and remove them.
