Goods worth over Rs 56 lakhs stocked without following proper rules were seized and a shop person was arrested in this connection after a raid by ration officials at Bhiwandi in the district, police said today.

The officials of the rationing department raided a fair price shop during the weekend and seized goods worth Rs 56,06,690 kept against the prescribed rules, police said, adding that the shop owner was arrested.

Kongaon police have registered offences under relevant section of the Essential Commodities Act against the shop owner, they said.

The raid also revealed that there was a shortage in the stock of palmoil and vanaspati ghee, and the stock differed from the register maintained at the shop.

The trader also allegedly sold adulterated oil to customers, thus cheating them, police added.
