Government hospital conducts 100 cochlear implants

: The Coimbatore Medical College Hospital (CMCH)- the Government hospital, has crossed 100 cochlear implantations in children in the last two years

The first implantation was performed on August 10, 2013 and the 100th on October 1 under the Chief Minister's Comprehensive Health Insurance Scheme under Tamil Nadu Health System Project, Dr Aravinthan, Head of the department, ENT, in the hospital told reporters today.

The implant, which normally cost Rs seven lakh is done free of cost under the scheme on children in the age group of 0 to 6 years, children, he said.

Stating that six in every 1,000 children were affected by damaged inner ear problem, Aravinthan said that the number were on the decline, because of increasing awareness.
