A senior Delhi government officer was arrested today for allegedly threatening a woman metropolitan magistrate by pointing an air gun at her and abusing her on religious lines while asking her to withdraw a complaint registered against him in July, police said today.

The accused, identified as Shamim Akhtar, a 1996-batch DANICS officer, has served at the Waqf board and Department of Social Welfare.

Akhtar has been booked under Sections 506 (criminal intimidation), 509 (words to insult the modesty of a woman), 336 (act endangering life or personal safety of others) and 153A (promoting enmity between different groups on grounds of religion, race, place of birth, language, etc) of IPC, said DCP (North) Madhur Verma.

According to the police, a fight broke out between the accused and the metropolitan magistrate at the parking lot of a residential complex at Rajpura Road in north Delhi's Civil Lines area, during which he allegedly threatened the woman and abused her over religious lines.

He also allegedly brought a gun and pointed at her, which later turned out to be an air gun.

The Metropolitan Magistrate has lodged a complaint against Akhtar in July this year, after which he was detained as a preventive measure taken by the police to maintain peace. He allegedly wanted her to withdraw that complaint, said a police officer.

In April, another senior Delhi Government official had alleged that Akhtar had threatened him of dire consequences, misbehaved and hurled filthy abuses at him. A police complaint was received in connection to that in April, the officer added.
