Government official held for accepting bribe in Maha

A government official was today held for allegedly accepting a bribe of Rs 16,000 from a contractor in the district, Anti Corruption Bureau (ACB) official said.

Popat Shankar Burkul, a branch engineer of Zilla Parishad, working in Panchayat Samiti office in Nandgoan in the district, demanded a bribe from the contractor, to pass his remaining bill of Rs 3 lakh, an ACB release said.

The said contractor has received his earlier bill of Rs 8 lakh and Burkul demanded the bribe to pass the remaining bill, it said.

Following a complaint, a trap was laid this afternoon at his office and Burkul was caught red-handed while accepting the bribe, the release added.
 

A case under relevant sections of Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988 has been registered, officials said, adding investigations are underway.
