Governor dissolves West Bengal Assembly

West Bengal Governor Keshri Nath Tripathi today dissolved the state Assembly ahead of the swearing-in of Mamata Banerjee and her cabinet members on May 27.

Banerjee will be sworn-in for the second consecutive term as Chief Minister after overwhelming in of Trinamool Congress in the recently concluded Assembly elections.

"The Governor has been pleased to dissolve the existing West Bengal Legislative Assembly today on the recommendation of the Chief Minister," a Raj Bhavan release said, adding the Governor also accepted the resignation of Mamata Banerjee and all other members of her council of ministers, which is a mere formality.

Further, on the recommendation of the Chief Minister, the Governor appointed Jatu Lahiri, an MLA, to perform the duties as pro-tem Speaker from the commencement of the first meeting of the new Legislative Assembly until the Legislative Assembly chooses a member of the Assembly to be the Speaker, the release added.
