Govt bans import of synthetic resin polymethyl methacrylate

The government has banned import of a synthetic resin, polymethyl methacrylate, with effect from September 1, according to a commerce ministry notification.

The product is a kind of a synthetic resin. It is used in products like shatterproof windows, and illuminated signs.

"Import policy of polymethyl methacrylate is revised from free to prohibited with effect from September 1 this year," the Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT) has said in a notification.

DGFT is an arm of the commerce ministry which deals with export- and import-related policies.

Import of the product during April-June 2019 stood at Rs 8.43 lakh. It was Rs 45.74 lakh in 2018-19.
