The Central government has declined a representation regarding birth anniversary celebration of warrior king Chatrapati Shivaji this year, the Lok Sabha was informed today.

In a written reply, Culture Minister Mahesh Sharma said the representation was received by his ministry, but the proposal was not agreed to.

"These were examined and the proposal contained in the representation was not agreed to," he said.

Sharma clarified that the government commemorates birth centenary, 125th/150th/175th anniversaries and so on of great personalities and memorable events related to the Indian history.

Born on February 19, 1630, Shivaji's 400th birth anniversary will be due in the year 2030, he said.

"As no commemoration in respect of Chatrapati Shivaji was due in the year 2017, no celebrations were held on February 19 this year," he added.
