"The incident shows that the state government has no control over sand mafia," state BJP president Sudhir Mungantiwar said in a statement here.
Rajendra Sartape (40) was killed after he stopped the tractor of an illegal sand transporter yesterday. After stopping the tractor, Sartape was sitting in the vehicle. However, the driver allegedly drove the vehicle at high speed and later overturned it, thus killing Sartape.
Sartape's assistant, Bintu Shinde (40) who was also sitting in the tractor, was seriously injured in the incident. He has been admitted to the district government hospital in Satara.
A large number of people and the victim's relatives held a 'rasta roko' near the bus terminus for nearly three hours to demand the arrest of the sand transporter.
