CPI(M) state Secretary Pinaryai Vijayan charged the Government with having prevailed upon the investigators to take into custody two prominent leaders of the party as part of the move to "haunt" the CPI(M) and reap political gains.
This had resulted in difference in the SIT with its head taking the stand that it would be difficult to frame anybody without proper evidence to do so, he told a press meet.
Vijayan alleged Chief Minister Oommen Chandy and Union Minister of state for Home Mullapally Ramachandran had right from the start approached the case as an opportunity to tarnish the CPI(M) by framing the party activists.
This had become all the more clear with the police taking into custody the office secretary of the CPI(M)'s area committee office in Koothuparamba in Kannur.
"Our stand has been clear from the start that party had no role in the killing of RMP leader. We have condemned the murder.We wanted an independent investigation and the culprits brought to book. But,the direction of the investigation is not acceptable as its focus is on putting the CPI(M) in the dock", he said.
Asked if he thought that some of the CPI(M) activists already arrested in the case were innocent, Vijayan said it would be difficult to dub them as culprits just because the police had made them accused. At the same time, the party would examine if they had taken a stand opposed to the party's line.
50-year-old Chandrasekharan was murdered on May 4 at Vallikkadu near Vatakara town in the district and the SIT has so far arrested 11 persons in this connection.
