Govt names Nutan Guha Biswas as IWAI Chairperson

Nutan Guha Biswas, Additional Secretary, Ministry of Women and Child Development will be the new Chairperson of the Inland Waterways Authority of India (IWAI).

Biswas, an Arunachal Pradesh-Goa-Mizoram and Union Territory (AGMUT) cadre IAS officer, would replace Amitabh Verma in the IWAI under the Ministry of Shipping.

Guha would be placed in the rank and pay of Secretary, by temporarily upgrading the post till July 31, 2018 or until further orders, whichever is earlier, the department of personnel and training said in a notification.

Verma, a 1982-batch IAS officer, has been sent to his parent cadre Bihar with immediate effect.
 

The IWAI works for development and regulation of inland waterways for shipping and navigation.

The authority primarily undertakes projects for development and maintenance of IWT (Inland Water Transport) infrastructure on national waterways through grant received from Ministry of Shipping.

India has about 14,500 km of navigable waterways, which comprise of rivers, canals, backwaters, creeks, etc.
