Govt official arrested for asking bribe

A government official was today arrested for allegedly demanding bribe from a man in the Ganderbal district of central Kashmir for settling his high electricity bill.

Niyaz Ahmad Rather, a computer operator in the Electric Division, Tulmulla, was caught by sleuths of State Vigilance Organisation (SVO) on a complaint by Ganderbal resident Mohammad Rafiq Najar, a spokesman of SVO said.

Najar, a resident of Saloora village of Ganderbal, had lodged a written complaint, claiming that the official was demanding Rs 1500 as bribe for settling his high electricity bill.

"On the basis of the complaint, a case was registered and trap laid," the spokesman said, adding the accused was caught while demanding and accepting money from the complainant in the presence of an independent witnesses.
 

The accused was taken into custody for further investigation, the spokesman said.
