Govt officials, local authorities discuss Ganga clean-up

A group of central government officials today met local municipal authorities and the Jal Board here and discussed with them issues related to cleaning of the Ganga river.

The meeting proposed to prohibit the discharge of effluents from the tanneries and other solid waste into the river which adds to pollution in it, an official said.

Kanpur District Magistrate Roshan Jacob said Joint Secretary and Mission Director of the National Mission for Clean Ganga, TVSN Prasad and other officials arrived here and held meetings with authorities from the city municipal corporation and the Jal Nigam.

Officials also said that four pumps which were constructed for cleansing of discharge from tanneries would be upgraded.
 

Prasad said that any new construction coming up within a distance of 500 metres from the river bank should be removed and also directed municipal authorities to take steps regarding the same.

During their visit, the officials also inspected the Sewage Treatment Plant facility situated at Jajmau area here, the DM said.
