About 2,500 multi-skill institutes would be set up in different parts of the country to promote skill development and entrepreneurship, government said today.

Union Minister Rajiv Pratap Rudy told Lok Sabha that the National Skill Development Corporation (NSDC) has carried out skill-mapping on a district-wise basis, except for Bihar.

Rudy, who has the independent charge of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship Ministry, said a study on job requirement and the skill gap has also been done.

Noting that various steps are being taken to promote skill development and entrepreneurship, Rudy said the government plans to set up 2,500 multi-skill institutes.

These institutes are expected to cover around 500 districts, with four each in every Parliamentary constituency, Rudy said during Question Hour, adding that efforts would be made to establish them through public private partnerships.

"The Ministry of Human Resource Development has initiated steps for integration of vocational education with formal education," he said, adding that if the universities wanted, skill development could be added to the curriculum.

Maintaining that NSDC was trying to develop entrepreneurship in coordination with Snapdeal and other platforms, he said start-ups were catching up and the current generation was set to become entrepreneurs.

Entrepreneurship is going to be one of the biggest job creators, Rudy said.

Speaker Sumitra Mahajan said there could be a discussion on skill development in the House as many members have questions to ask.

She also requested the Minister to hold discussion with young members and take their suggestions with regard to skill development.
