With an aim of producing good quality educators, the government has firmed up a slew of proposals, including setting up of 30 'schools of education' and 50 'centres of excellence' under a Rs 900 crore mission launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi yesterday.

Two inter-university centres for teachers education are also proposed under the Pandit Madan Mohan Malaviya National Mission on Teachers and Training, the first of which was inaugurated by the Prime Minister in Benaras Hindu University campus yesterday.

Besides, five centre for academic leadership and education management and a national resource centre for education are also mooted under the mission, according to an HRD Ministry note.

The mission envisages addressing comprehensively all issues related to teachers, teaching, teacher preparation, professional development, curriculum design, designing and developing assessment and evaluation methodology, research in pedagogy and developing effective Pedagogy.

It proposes to fill a critical gap in addressing the issue of quality of teaching in the education sector.

"The mission would address, on the one hand, current and urgent issues such as supply of qualified teachers, attracting talent into teaching profession and raising the quality of teaching in schools and colleges.

"On the other, it is also envisaged that the Mission would pursue long term goals of building a strong professional cadre of teachers by setting performance standards and creating top class institutional facilities for innovative teaching and professional development of teachers," the note said.

Modi, while making a strong pitch for producing good teachers in large numbers, yesterday launched a mission in this regard.
